What is Gum Recession?

Gum recession occurs when the gum tissue surrounding the teeth pulls back, exposing more of the tooth or its root. This affects 1 in 2 adults over 30 and can lead to sensitivity, aesthetic concerns, and — if left untreated — eventual tooth loss.

Traditional treatment meant painful gum grafting surgery — cutting tissue from the roof of the mouth and stitching it in place. Recovery could take weeks. The Chao Pinhole® technique changes everything.

  • Teeth that appear longer than before
  • Sensitivity to hot, cold or sweet foods
  • Visible tooth roots or darkened tooth necks
  • Gums that bleed when brushing
  • Receding gum line on one or more teeth

Common Causes

🦷
Gum Disease
Periodontal disease is the most common cause of recession
🪥
Aggressive Brushing
Brushing too hard damages gum tissue over time
🧬
Genetics
Some people are simply predisposed to thinner gum tissue
⚙️
Teeth Grinding
Bruxism puts excessive pressure on gums and bone

The Chao Pinhole® Technique

A breakthrough procedure invented by Dr. John Chao — Dr. O'Kane trained with Dr. Chao personally in Los Angeles, making him one of very few certified providers in Ireland.

1

Tiny Pinhole

A small pinhole — no bigger than a needle tip — is made in the gum above the receded area. No cutting, no scalpel.

2

Gentle Repositioning

Specially designed instruments gently loosen and reposition the gum tissue back to its correct, healthy position.

3

Collagen Stabilisation

Tiny collagen strips are placed through the pinhole to hold the gum in its new position and stimulate natural healing.

Traditional Gum Graft

  • Cutting tissue from the roof of the mouth
  • Multiple incisions and sutures
  • Significant pain and swelling
  • Weeks of recovery time
  • Only 1–2 teeth per visit

Chao Pinhole® Technique

  • Single pinhole — no cutting required
  • No incisions, no sutures
  • Minimal discomfort during and after
  • Back to normal next day
  • Multiple teeth treated in one visit
