Damon Braces – The Latest in Orthodontics

What are Damon Braces?

Damon Braces are a revolutionary new type of orthodontic braces. They use a revolutionary shape-memory wire and sliding brackets which deliver far better results than traditional braces. Plus in a shorter time frame and a lower cost.

Damon Braces do a lot more than make your teeth straight. They widen your arches giving a fuller, more pleasing smile than traditional braces. Damon Braces also remove the need to get teeth extracted, which is welcome news for everyone.

First lets read a bit more about what Damon Braces can do for the fullness of your smile and the shape of your jaw.

A fuller smile

You know when you see people who have a really nice smile, they generally always have a wide and full smile?

Well Damon Braces are the only orthodontics braces that actually make this kind of smile happen. Generally you were either born with an amazing smile, or you get Damon Braces!

Damon Braces can improve your health

A nice smile is not only beautiful, it also promotes good health:

  • Straight and evenly spaced teeth are easier to keep clean, resulting in better oral health.
  • Properly aligned teeth chew more efficiently, which may help digestion.
  • Aligned teeth create a better bite, which may reduce stress, headaches, and strain on your supporting bone and tissue.
  • According to the American Association of Orthodontists, crooked and crowded teeth are hard to clean and maintain. This may contribute to conditions that cause not only tooth decay but may lead to gum disease and tooth loss.

But Damon Braces are give you more than a straight teeth. They also ensure your arch is the proper shape.

If you have a narrow arch this means the space in your mouth where your tongue is, will be smaller than someone with  wider arches.

A narrow arch can lead a range of problems. One big one is the roof if your mouth is pushed up higher into the nasal cavity. This makes breathing more difficult and can cause snoring at night time. It can also cause mouth breathing at night which leads to poor dental health. Because when you are breathing with your mouth open for hours the saliva from your mouth and lets bacteria grow. This bacteria then creates plague, destroys teeth and is swallowed affecting overall bodily health.

Narrows arches also don’t look good.  It causes you to have larger dark spaces in the corners of your mouth when you smile. These spaces are called the buccal corridor and smaller buccal corridors result in a younger more attractive smile.

TOP IMAGE : Large buccal corridors & narrow arch (narrower smile)

This is what many of us are born with unfortunately. There are many negatives, including asthetic and healthwise.

BOTTOM IMAGE : Small buccal corridors & widerarch (wider smile)

This smile is classically more attractive and youthful looking. It’s also better for overall health.

So Damon Braces can make your smile look better, make you look younger, improve your breathing and your overall health. Traditional braces can not give you these same results.

Misaligned teeth and gum problems

Crooked teeth often result in gum problems in later life, such as gum recession.  Gum recession is when your gums start to pull up and you end up looking like your teeth are very long. Like the saying “long in the tooth” meaning when someone is older.

The reason why orthodontic problems such as crooked teeth result in gum recession is easiest to explain with an analogy. Imagine you are at the beach and you put push a pole into the stand. The pole is easily standing up on it’s own. Now you push on the pole, pull it and push it, while it’s still buried in the sand.  What happens to the sand around the base of the pole? It starts to move away from the pole creating a pit around the base of the pole.  This means you can now see more of the pole.  Imagine the pole is a tooth, the pole beneath the sand is the root of the tooth and the sand is the gum tissue. This is essentially what happens with crooked misplaced teeth in the gums over time.

Properly aligned and seated teeth don’t move in the jaw nearly as much and experience far less gum problems over time.  Not to mention the fact that crooked teeth are more difficult to clean and that extra bacteria can lead to gum disease.

The “Damon Face-lift”

Damon Braces not only straighten teeth but they change the underlying bone structure of the jaw in a hugely positive way. Damon braces get the roots of the teeth into the correct plane of alignment. The effect this has on the jaw is a much greater benefit than any plastic surgeon can give with a face lift.

With Damon it’s all about the underlying bone structure. That is why we are so against extractions. Keeping all your teeth gives a much better jaw shape. Where as traditional braces and ‘Invisalign’ (and other removable clear teeth straighteners) often call for having teeth extracted and don’t change the underlying bone structure.

Do you know what it looks like when someone has no teeth, but they have their mouth closed. It’s very obvious from the shape of their jaw.

Now imagine someone who has perfectly aligned and positioned teeth and how their jaw shape would look like compared to someone with a less than perfect teeth alignment.

The shape of someone’s smile (they way the roots of their teeth are aligned) actually shapes their face even with their mouth closed and not smiling, because it shapes their jaw and the shape of their face.

Having a more attractive jaw makes your face look better. So getting Damon Braces is like having a face-lift without any surgery. It’s especially useful for people in the middle age and above but getting Damon Braces at a young age ensures you’re going to look your best at all ages too.

Damon Braces vs Traditional Braces

Traditional braces have a wire that is tied onto the teeth using elastics.  This causes more friction and pressure which in turn causes more discomfort than Damon braces do. The traditional way of doing braces is slower, requiring more trip to the dentist and higher cost.

Damon braces use a slide mechanism to hold the special shape-memory wire. This allows teeth to move more freely, quickly and comfortably. That means less time with braces on, less trips to the dentist to you the braces adjusted and less cost. Plus the fact there is no need for these elastic ties that traditional braces use means that Damon braces are cleaner resulting in less plaque.

Damon Clear Braces

Damon Braces

Damon Clear are a good choice for those who are conscious of their appearance. The pros of Damon Clear are they are less noticeable than regular Damon brackets. However they do have some con’s to be aware of.  Firstly they are more expensive and secondly they are not suitable to be used in every situation.  Typically for lower teeth they are not suitable. The reasons being the type of material they are made of (aluminum silicate) which gives them their clear appearance, is not as strong as the metal used in the regular Damon brackets. This means two things. Firstly the clear brackets are bulkier than the regular brackets, so they can’t be used on smaller teeth, such as lower front teeth. Secondly they can’t provide as much torque as the regular brackets so they can’t be used on teeth which are very crooked.

So Damon Clear braces are a great option for self conscious patients, but take into consideration the extra cost and be aware your dentist may advise against getting them in a scenario where the teeth are either too small or too badly out of place.

Damon Clear Braces vs Damon Metal Braces

We always prefer to use the metal damon “Q” brackets. They are more efficient at turning teeth and are smaller, so they’re always the choice for smaller lower teeth.  The “adapt” to the individual surface contours of the teeth & thus improve the precision and ultimately the range of movements required. They allow us to finish more predictably. They’re almost indestructible and we can individualise root torques more readily as they don’t tend to fracture like the aluminium silicate “clear” brackets. The “Q” brackets have a slot for an extra wire which can save months of treatment should a debonded bracket go unnoticed. Not only all these reasons but they cost a little bit less.

Damon Clear vs Invisalign

Invisialign look better. You can take them out to eat. It’s easier to brush and floss your teeth. But the disadvantages of Invisialign are, you need to be super disciplined to use them. You can take them off, but you need to wear them 22 hours per day. Aligners need to be removed any time you eat or drink anything but water. When you’re in public, you need to discreetly remove the aligners, not lose them, brush your teeth after eating before replacing the aligner. Also some people suffer from speech impediments with invisible aligners. With Damon Clear, you don’t have to worry about any speech problems.

The cost of Invisialign and brace is now similar due to 3D scanning technology.

Invisialign is not always the best treatment. There are many things Invisialign can’t fix, so even if you wanted them, you may not be a candidate.

Anyone can use Damon Braces and Damon Braces will give a perfect result for every patient every time.

Damon Braces can also close gaps in teeth and straighten crooked teeth faster than Invisialign.

With Damon Clear we typically fit the clear brackets onto the top teeth only, because the lower teeth are smaller and the Damon Clear brackets are slightly larger than the metal Damon Q brackets, which are small enough for the lower teeth.

Using Damon Clear on the top teeth and the small Damon Q brackets on the rear and lower teeth gives the best combination and subtlety and performance.

Cost Of Braces

The cost of braces or any other dental treatments should never keep you from achieving the smile you’ve always wanted. Getting that perfect smile is an investment in yourself.  Because you are investing in yourself that will pay for itself and more for your entire life to come. Think in terms of the self esteem and confidence you will get. How it will affect your career and your relationships and every other facet of your life.

How much do Damon Braces cost?

Typically, Damon Braces cost anywhere between €3200 – €4000.  The price depends heavily on the complexity of the individual case. Some patients teeth may take a lot less ‘fixing’ so we’re able to move those teeth in a lot less time, which means a lower cost.nt in yourself.  Because you are investing in yourself that will pay for itself and more for your entire life to come. Think in terms of the self esteem and confidence you will get. How it will affect your career and your relationships and every other facet of your life.

How long do Damon Braces take?

Typically the minimum you would need to wear Damon Braces would be 12 months. Unlike short term orthodontics such as “Six Month Smiles” we can to get the roots of the teeth into the correct plane. This is the secret to the “Damon Brace-Lift” where the overall appearance of your face is improved not just by having straight teeth now, but also because the shape of your jaw will be much more attractive. This can make young people look more mature and attractive and make older more mature people look younger and more attractive.  The “brace-lift” / “face-lift” works both ways!

Most cases are 14 – 18 months.  This varies greatly depending on the individual case. Factors that can affect the time are how many teeth need to be moved and how far they need to be moved and how dense the bone is.

These few months of your life will go quickly and you’ll have an amazing set of teeth and a beautifully shaped jaw forever.

Note that Damon Braces are 3-4 months faster than traditional braces.

The Pros of Damon Braces

1. Faster Treatment

Clinical studies demonstrate that the Damon System treatment is typically 3-4 months faster than traditional braces.

2. Extraordinary Results

Clinical studies show that Invisalign and Six Month Smiles (short term brace) deliver limited results. They tend to improve the straightness of the teeth by only 41%. With the Damon System you get more than straight teeth. Our Damon trained specialists will take into account your unique facial profile when aligning your teeth, bite and smile. In no time you’ll have the smile and facial profile and aesthetics you’ve always dreamed about.

3. Greater Comfort

Clinical studies show that Damon Braces are more comfortable than traditional orthodontic braces.

Damon Brace use a tieless system which don’t require ‘tightening’ making them more gentle on the teeth and gums. Other styles of braces use clips or elastics that bind the archwires in place, which makes treatment more uncomfortable and actually takes longer to finish treatment too.

4. Fewer Visits to the Clinic

Damon System treatment requires fewer visits to the dental clinic than traditional systems. Typically a patient will require seven fewer appointments using the Damon System than traditional systems. Imagine the amount of time out of your busy lifestyle seven dental appointments less will save you. The Damon System is far more convenient.

5. Easy to Keep Clean.

Clinical studies show that the elastic ring of traditional braces collect more bacteria and plaque and can lead to gingival conditions.  Damon Braces do not use elastomeric rings, so your braces are easier to keep clean.

6. A Great Smile for a Lifetime

Deciding what type of treatment you want can be a difficult decision. Traditional braces, invisible aligners or Damon Clear? When making your decision, be sure to look at the big picture. Don’t focus solely on what you will experience during your time in treatment. Focus on what you will look like for the rest of your life. With Damon Clear, you’ll benefit from fast, comfortable braces that are virtually invisible during treatment. And after treatment, you’ll have a spectacular smile that goes beyond just straight teeth.

Following the end of treatment, teeth often have a tendency to return to their original positions, which is called a relapse. There are a variety of factors that may influence the possibility of relapse including the type of treatment. One study showed that patients treated with Invisalign relapsed more than those treated with braces.6 Damon System results are built to last. However, because all teeth have a tendency to relapse, it may be necessary to wear some type of removable retention device at night — such as a Damon Splint — following treatment.
