A recent study of nine commonly-available toothpastes designed for sensitive teeth has found the claims to be untrue.
Sensitivity is caused by erosion of the dental surface (enamel) and these toothpastes claim that they prevent and reverse erosion. The study found otherwise and also advised that the best way to deal with sensitivity is a three-way approach
– Treatment as advised by a dentist
– The use of an appropriate toothpaste (proven to deliver its claims)
– Change in diet to cut acidic and sugary foods/drinks.
– Proper gentle brushing using a moderate toothbrush.
A co-author of the study said “We’re now working on other studies relating to dentin in order to think about possibilities, given that none of these toothpastes was found capable of preventing dental erosion or dentin hypersensitivity, which is a cause of concern.”
