A recent study asked participants to rate 3D computer-animated smiles that varied in terms of angle, number of teeth, symmetry and the number of teeth visible.
– The most pleasing smiles were deemed to be symmetrical – developing evenly on both left and right sides of the face
– Smiles that did not have too many teeth on display were rated as pleasing
– These findings could be useful for facial reconstruction surgeons and rehabilitation for facial paralysis such as stroke sufferers
“Bigger smiles that showed more teeth tended to be rated as less effective, genuine or pleasant.”
